The Whisper Man is honestly one of the best crime/thriller novels that I have read this year for so many reasons.
The first being that North navigated two plot threads seamlessly in his debut novel โ the supernatural and the police procedural. I definitely went into reading this novel with expectations that this book would be a pretty straight-forward crime fiction and I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the underlying supernatural and paranormal vibes.
Second, North has a magical, almost lyrical, way of describing the characters and their relationships. I genuinely became attached to Tom Kennedy and his son Jake. My literally heart felt for him at the loss of his wife and at times his inability to connect with Jake. I felt his frustration at having to starting over and a part of me really identified with Jakeโs character as well โ moving to a new town, losing his mother, trying to remain true to himself and make his father happy.
Third, I was genuinely terrified. I have read my fair share of thriller and mystery novels that have creeped me out and made my jumpy โ but this is the first that made double and triple check to make sure my doors were locked at night.
Overall, I highly recommend this book. Especially, if you are in the mood to be spooked.
